Troubleshoot AI Connections to WordPress

A failed WordPress AI task can originate in the client, connector, network, authentication, WordPress capability or prompt. Changing all layers at once makes the problem harder to solve and often leads users to bypass a useful refusal with excessive access.

The troubleshooting method in this hub uses known-good and known-denied controls. First determine where the request failed, then change one layer and repeat the same small tests.

Classify before correcting

A client that cannot load a server is different from a server that cannot reach WordPress. A 401 authentication failure is different from a 403 authorization refusal. A tool that does not exist is different from an existing tool that rejects the supplied record or action.

Record versions and scope

Compatibility is a matrix, not a general adjective. Record the AI client version, connector or MCP server version, WordPress version, product artifact, identity mode, transport and exact task. Sanitize all errors and never include credentials.

Preserve refusal as a control

When a write is refused under Read Only, do not “fix” the problem by assigning administrator access. Confirm whether the task truly requires writing. If it does, create a separate workflow with the next suitable mode and repeat the refusal regression for publication or administration.

Escalate with evidence

A useful support report contains reproducible steps, expected behavior, observed behavior, sanitized output and the smallest known-good request. It does not rely on screenshots of secret-bearing configuration or on vague statements such as “Claude cannot connect.”

Solve an AI connection or access error

Start from the exact message, HTTP status or missing tool. Diagnose transport, authentication, identity and permission separately instead of widening access.

A simple way to get useful results

Get structured site information and inspect selected published pages after connecting. No temporary task is needed for this public reading. You can also browse public pages without the plugin; Agent Control adds structured access and a path toward authorized WordPress work. Authorize a draft task and select any reference content. The assistant can create and revise drafts created by that task. Existing references remain read-only, even when a reference is itself a draft. Review the result in WordPress. Approving a content change does not authorize publication. Solo, Pro or Agency must also have a publication task that covers the still-valid approval. Check the published result yourself.
